Canadian Dental Care Plan in Quebec

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provides dental care coverage to Canadian residents who have an adjusted family net income below $90,000 and who don’t have access to dental insurance. For eligible Canadians, the CDCP will help cover the cost of various oral health care services.

When does the Canadian Dental Care Plan start?

The program is expected to begin in May 2024. Seniors over 65, adults with a valid disability and children under 18 will be the first group to be able to take advantage of this plan

In 2025, the remaining eligible Canadian residents will be accepted.

Take note that not all dental services will be available from the beginning  and some such as orthodontics will be added at a later date (2025)

Who qualifies for the healthcare program?

Canadian residents who do not have a private dental insurance and have an adjusted family net income of less than 90 000$.

How do I subscribe to the CDCP?

Most people will be contacted by mail with directions how to subscribe to CDCP through Sunlife insurance. If you qualify and did not receive a letter you can apply online as well.

What does the Canadian Dental Care Plan cover?

The services that CDCP cover are very similar to those that a private insurance would cover but with no annual spending limits.

In my opinion as a dentist, the CDCP is a very comprehensive plan that covers the needs of the population very well.  It appears that  in some ways it offers a better coverage than many private insurances.

The plan focuses on prevention (exams, cleanings, scellants,  and other preventive treatments) repairing existing teeth as well as treating gum disease.

What is to note, is that the plan covers even for badly damaged teeth and allows for the use of root canals, posts, prefabricated crowns (these are usually metal crowns) and even regular crowns (although they limit their use to 4 every 1o years)

However, when teeth are unrepairable, the plan will only cover their extraction and the replacement with a removable denture, albeit a quality one!

Therefore no replacement of lost teeth with a fixed solution is included in the plan. In other words, dental bridges and dental implants will not be included in any shape and form.

On a good note, orthodontics and sedation dentistry are included in the plan.

Also to note that certain treatments such as crowns, posts, gum disease treatment, dentures, orthodontics and sedation, a pre approval by Sunlife must be submitted before beginning treatments.

How much will the CDCP cover of the price of dental treatments?

If you adjusted family net income is less than 70,000$, 100% of eligible services will be covered. You will need to pay nothing out of pocket.

If you adjusted family net income is between 70,000$ and 79,999$, 60% of eligible services will be covered. You will have to pay 40% out of pocket.

If you adjusted family net income is between 80,000$ and 89,999$, 40% of eligible services will be covered. You will have to pay 60% out of pocket.

It is important to note that the CDCP fees which are covered are lower than the regular dental fees. At Blanc Dental Center we believe in affordable quality healthcare therefore we will strive to follow the fees recommended by the Federal Government.
