How Long Does A Dental Implant Last?

First, What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. They are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth because they offer a stable and long-lasting foundation for prosthetic teeth that closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

High quality dental Implants can last a lifetime if they are well taken care of and are placed well.

How do I make my dental implants last longer?

  • Regular daily hygiene using an electric toothbrush as well as floss or interdental brushes
  • A regular supportive therapy, such as a professional dental cleaning that removes plaque from the implants.
  • A healthy lifestyle. Certain diseases such as diabetes increases the risk to lose a dental implant early
  • Cigarette free lifestyle
  • A healthy nutrition rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Wearing a night guard if you experience clenching or bruxism.

What are quality dental implants?

Quality dental implants come from reputable brands such as Straumann, Biohorizon, Nobel, Astra. These companies sell premium implants which have distinctive features that make them better than the competition. Many of them back their implants with a lifetime warranty covering not only the implant but the surgery if something happens with the implant.

Straumann, a swiss company, has the following advantages:

  • High build quality
  • Roxolid – They integrate zirconium in their implants to make them stronger. This allows for smaller implants to be placed which as just as strong and requiring less bone grafts.
  • Slactive – An innovative surface that accelerates osseointegration and allows for the restoration, such as a crown to be placed earlier, shortening treatment time.

Biohorizon

  • High build quality
  • Laser-Lok – A laser treated surface of the implant which allows a stronger tissue attachment to the implant making them less likely to experience bone loss around (main cause of long term implant failure is bone loss around implants)

Nobel

  • High quality implants
  • The original implant company started by the inventor of implants, Professor Branemark over 60 years ago.
  • Ti-Ultra – A multi surface implant where one part of the implant is optimized for tissue attachment and the other for bone. Because tissue protects the bone, Nobel expects less bone loss with this strategy and longer lasting implants.

Do zirconia implants last as long as standard titanium implants?

Studies show that Zirconia implants, such as Straumann Pure Ceramic, integrate in the body as well as titanium ones. But do they last? Implants generally fail in two ways.

The first and main reason dental implants fail is that bacteria colonizes the implant and the bone supporting it recedes. This process happens slowly until no more bone surrounds the implant. It is called peri implantitis.

The second reason implants fail is the implant breaking. This type of implant failure is rather rare because high quality dental implants are made of titanium which makes them quite sturdy. In our clinical practice, for each 100 implants we see failed, 99 will be lost to peri implantitis and 1 to mechanical failure.

Zirconia is quite a strong material, but not as strong as titanium therefore we might see more zirconia implants fracture in the future. On the other hand, certain studies show that bacteria adhere less well on zirconia, perhaps making them less prone to get peri implantitis.  It is hard to say if zirconia implants will last as long or longer than titanium implants because of a lack of studies done. That said implant companies such as Straumann believe they do and offer a lifetime warranty on their zirconia implant Pure Ceramic.

How much do dental implant cost?

In 2023, the average price of dental implants placement cost in Canada ranges between 1800-2500$ depending on:

  • The type of implant. (Premium implants are Straumann, Nobel, Biohorizon, Astra)
  • The complexity of the procedure.
  • A fully guided procedure or manual placement. Fully guided implants are a minimally invasive procedure where the implant is placed using a 3d printed guide. This modern technique allows for the implant to be placed quickly with no scalpel or sutures. Patients report a much faster healing and many don’t need to take any painkillers.

What is the dental replacement cost of a failing implant?

Before replacing a dental implant and its crown, consider options to repair it using the latest technologies such as Galvosurge (www.galvosurge.com)

If your dental professional deems your implant non repairable, replacing a failed implant could  cost between 2000-3000$ CAD plus the price of the crown.

How to to find affordable dental implants?

According to Dr. Dan Munteanu, the most important part of dental placement is the skilled clinician doing the work. He will share with you strategies to save on dental implants but stresses that implants badly placed end up costing patients more on the long run in repairs or redos. Therefore the most important choice is to find a clinician that you trust, has been referred by his colleagues and has many years of experience placing implants.

That said here are 5 important things to consider when looking for a good price on dental implants:

1- If you have multiple implants, consider doing them in the same time. Most surgeons will offer a discounted price when doing more than one implant in the same procedure.

2- Ask for a generic implant. Especially if you are placing multiple implants, the brand of implant could make a difference in price. Dr. Dan Munteanu tells us that he will usually give patients the choice of the dental implant brand while explaining the differences and advantages of each.

3- Look for a clinician that is experienced with graftless procedures. Dr Dan Munteanu says that certain implant systems or novel procedures allow the placing of implants without the need to add bone, reducing costs and suffering for patients.

4- Explore alternative treatments. Often patients come to our office with a damaged tooth thinking they require an implant but with the use of modern dentistry can save their tooth without requiring a dental implant.
